Nigerian Music star Burna Boy is setting the record straight regarding ongoing comparisons to Afrobeat legend Fela Kuti. The Grammy-winning artist took to his Instagram story on December 30 to address what he sees as a persistent issue, telling fans and critics alike to stop linking him to the iconic Fela.
In a bold statement, Burna Boy made it clear: “I’m not Fela, I’m BIG7.” He further explained that his focus is on positivity, peace, and prosperity but made it clear that he wouldn’t shy away from defending himself if necessary. “Honestly, I’d rather kill you than die for you,” Burna Boy added, sending a strong message to those who continue to draw parallels between him and the late Afrobeat pioneer.
The post comes as part of a series where Burna Boy expressed his frustration with the culture of exaggeration and falsehoods on social media. In a separate post, he called out those who boast about owning luxury properties or cars they don’t actually own. “If you ever lied about buying Sujimoto’s house in Banana Island when you only rented it… do better in 2025,” Burna Boy posted, continuing, “If you have an aftermarket ‘rainbow Daytona,’ stop telling people it’s real.”
Burna Boy’s candid comments reflect his growing impatience with the public’s tendency to create and perpetuate false narratives, as well as the constant comparisons to Fela Kuti, whom he has long acknowledged as one of his greatest inspirations.
Despite sharing similarities in their music’s social consciousness, Burna Boy has often distanced himself from the activist label, particularly after criticism following the 2020 #EndSARS protests. While he has used his platform to address government corruption and social issues through his music, He has repeatedly stated that he is not an activist, drawing a line between his role as an artist and that of a political figure.
