Burna Boy has opened up about the deeply personal reason he hasn’t yet started a family, despite it being his ultimate goal.
In a candid interview on The Official UK Afrobeats Chart Show, the 34-year-old star revealed that his demanding career leaves little room for the kind of hands-on parenting he aspires to. Known for his electrifying performances and relentless touring schedule, Burna Boy said he’s not ready to become a father until he can be fully present in his children’s lives.
“Having a family is my main goal,” he shared. “But it’s not achievable for me right now because I don’t want to do it while constantly on the road.”
The “Last Last” hitmaker emphasized his desire to emulate his own father, who was deeply involved in his upbringing — even if not wealthy. “My father wasn’t rich, but he was there,” he said. “Now imagine my kids saying, ‘He was rich, but he wasn’t around.’ I want to give better than I got.”
Burna Boy, whose real name is Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu, said he envisions taking a long-term break from music potentially up to four years to focus on fatherhood when the time is right.
“I want to be the kind of dad who goes to school plays and parent-teacher meetings,” he added. “That’s not something I can do right now, but when I can, I’ll know it’s time.”
The artist hails from a close-knit family of five. His mother, Bose Ogulu, not only raised him but now manages his booming career. His sister, Nissi, is a multidisciplinary artist, while his brother, Romani, oversees creative operations as the director of Burna’s label, Spaceship Collective.
