Remix albums can go one of two ways – they can either be mundane or they can truly push boundaries. Imani Basquiat’s Groove Pack is a testament to the latter, keeping things fresh and exciting.

A five-track EP that offers a glimpse into the eclectic artist’s diverse tastes, with contributions from several local producers, Basquiat reimagines his 2023 single “Groove Theory” with various remixes. The result is a fusion of genres, each track shaped by unique production style.

“Doou’s Groove” – a sultry R&B/electro-fusion track by DoouShii – starts off the project, a wavy joint offering a laid back feel that sets the tone for the rest of the EP.

belovedcensored’s “Beloved’s Groove” follows, bringing a touch of 90’s hip-hop to an otherwise mellow arrangement, while heavy bass lines and subtle scratches bring a distinct edge.

“KaeB’s Groove” is more funky and soulful (think 2000s Soul Candi compilation). It has a groovier tempo (pun intended) and an undeniable danceability, while “Yolo’s Groove” by Yolophonik brings to mind the sounds of Anderson .Paak and GoldLink, driven by sharp drums and dreamy synth-sounds.

The project closes with an alternate version of “Groove Theory” by Basquiat himself and it’s packed with swagger. The artist’s smooth vocal delivery makes for a somewhat larger than life rendition of the original, and is without a doubt a highlight of the EP.

Groove Pack shines in its diversity, whilst still maintaining Imani Basquiat’s keen sense of artistry. Spin this one over the weekend, you won’t regret it.
