A recent study by software subscription company Setapp reveals that Instagram is the most popular mobile application of 2024, boasting an impressive popularity score of 90.

With 696 million downloads and a solid average rating of 4.5, Instagram continues to lead the charge in social media engagement and e-commerce integration.

The study assessed mobile app popularity across various categories, including social media, messaging, gaming, and shopping, by analyzing downloads, user ratings, and overall satisfaction.

The data was gathered using official APIs from the Google Play Store and Apple App Store and third-party analytics sources.

Setapp highlighted a key insight from its findings: successful apps innovate and quickly adapt to user needs and market changes.

“Instagram’s dominance, with its vast download numbers and high rating, shows its ability to innovate and align with e-commerce trends, keeping users engaged,” the report stated.

Following closely behind is TikTok, with 654 million downloads and a slightly higher rating of 4.6, earning it a score of 85.

TikTok’s short-form video content and trend-driven engagement continue to resonate particularly well with younger audiences.

WhatsApp leads the messaging category, amassing 475 million downloads and an average rating of 4.55.

At the same time, video editing app CapCut ends in the fifth spot on the list, boasting 389 million downloads and an average rating of 4.55.

Other notable mentions include Telegram, Snapchat, Subway Surfers, Zoom, and shopping platform Temu, rounding out the top ten with various features that cater to user preferences.
