Nigerian singer Joeboy has clarified that his genre of music is Afrobeat but also transcends beyond Afrobeats.
During his appearance on the Big Friday show hosted by Reality TV personality Tacha, Joeboy clarified that while he identifies with Afrobeat due to his Nigerian roots, he acknowledged the potential for his music to span across genres such as Pop or R&B.
Tacha, referring to Wizkid’s recent statements disassociating himself from Afrobeat, questioned Joeboy about his own genre preferences. In response, Joeboy expressed his flexibility in musical styles, stating that while he may lean towards Afrobeat, he feels it would be unjust to categorize his diverse tracks solely under that label.
He said “I would say basically because I am a Nigerian artist almost everything I do would be termed under the umbrella of afrobeat which is totally fine. But sometimes I could make Pop music or R&B. I feel like sometimes its not fair for me to make R&B and somebody should say ‘Oh its afrobeat’. But I feel like music is so dynamic that you can’t just box it into one spot”
