Wasiu Ayinde Marshal, popularly known as KWAM 1, has publicly apologized following a controversial incident at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja that has sparked nationwide debate.

The incident occurred on August 5, when the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) accused the 68-year-old music icon of attempting to board a ValueJet flight to Lagos with an “unidentified liquid substance” in a flask. According to FAAN, the singer allegedly ignored aviation security (AVSEC) warnings and the flight captain’s instructions, and reportedly spilled alcohol on airport staff during a confrontation.

The uproar surrounding the event intensified when two ValueJet pilots were reportedly suspended due to the fracas, drawing attention from the public and aviation authorities alike.

In a press conference held on Friday, KWAM 1 addressed the incident, describing it as “unfortunate” and offering a heartfelt apology. He firmly denied allegations that the flask contained alcohol, stating instead that it held only water—a necessity, he said, due to a medical condition.

“Unknown to many, I suffer from chronic dehydration, and my doctor strongly advised that I remain constantly hydrated,” the Fuji star explained. “This is why I always carry a water flask with me. Contrary to the negative narrative being circulated in some quarters, the flask contained only water, not alcohol.”

The controversy has not only threatened the reputation of the music veteran but also prompted strong action from Nigerian aviation authorities. On Thursday, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, warned that any airline violating a six-month no-fly order on KWAM 1 risks losing its operating license.

The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) issued the six-month flight ban in response to what it termed “unruly behavior” and “non-compliance with aviation protocols.”

Despite the backlash, KWAM 1 expressed hope that the matter could be resolved amicably, while urging the public to avoid jumping to conclusions.

“I deeply regret the misunderstanding this has caused,” he said. “It is never my intention to disrupt public order or disrespect those in service.”

The singer’s apology marks a significant development in the unfolding saga, though it remains to be seen whether the ban and disciplinary actions will be lifted or reviewed in light of his statement.
