Kwam 1 breaks silence on airport incident

Nigerian Fuji music legend, King Wasiu Ayinde Marshal, popularly known as Kwam 1, has addressed the controversy surrounding an incident at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, involving him and officials of ValueJet airline on August 5, 2025.

Earlier reports suggested that the veteran musician was involved in a security altercation and nearly struck by an aircraft during a boarding-related misunderstanding. However, in a statement issued through his media aide, Kunle Rasheed, the singer firmly denied any wrongdoing and maintained that he was the victim, not the aggressor, in the now-viral incident.

According to Kwam 1’s team, the confrontation began after airport security raised concerns over what was believed to be a “suspicious substance” in his possession. The substance, however, was later confirmed to be nothing more than bottled drinking water handed to the artiste while he was waiting in the lounge.

“Despite his respectful effort to clarify this, the situation was unnecessarily escalated,” the statement read, pushing back against media reports that painted the Fuji icon as unruly or posing a security threat.

Kwam 1 further disclosed that senior executives of ValueJet, including the Chairman and Managing Director, personally reached out to apologize over the handling of the incident. In a gesture of reconciliation, he claimed the airline even offered a private jet to fly him to Lagos, an offer he respectfully turned down.

“If I had done anything wrong, why would the Chairman of the airline and the Head of Airport Security be calling me to apologise?” the music veteran questioned.

In a sharp twist, the singer also alleged that the pilot involved in the incident has now been suspended, suggesting an internal cover-up. “Given the circumstances, it is no surprise if she attempts to deflect blame, surely, she must lie to cover herself up,” he said.

As of the time of reporting, ValueJet has yet to issue an official public statement addressing the allegations or confirming the pilot’s reported suspension.

The incident continues to stir conversation on social media, with fans and industry observers calling for clarity and transparency from all parties involved.
