Renowned Nigerian filmmaker Bolanle Austen-Peters has been shortlisted to receive the prestigious title of Erelu Asa of Iru Kingdom, recognizing her exceptional contributions to the arts and society. The official conferment of the title will occur on June 14, 2025, in a ceremony presided over by His Royal Majesty, AbdulWasiu Gbolahan Lawal, the Oniru of Iruland.

The title ceremony is part of the grand celebrations marking the fifth anniversary of the Oniru’s reign, a milestone that highlights his leadership and dedication to the growth and development of Iru Kingdom. Austen-Peters, known for her innovative films and impact on Nigeria’s cultural landscape, will join a distinguished list of Nigerians set to receive honorary chieftaincy titles from the Oniru.

Other notable Nigerians being honored include Chief (Mrs) Basira Titilayo Smith, who has been named Iya Oba of Iru Kingdom; Chief Adeyemi Idowu, designated Aare Majeobaje of Iru Kingdom; and Chief Muyiwa Gbadegesin, who will be conferred with the title of Aare So’ludero of Iru Kingdom. Additional recipients include Chief Lukman Olayiwola Mustapha (Aare Fiwagboye of Iru Kingdom), Chief Idris Ibikunle Olorunnimbe (Asoju Oba of Iru Kingdom), and Chief Adegboyega Hakeem Akintoye (Ajiroba of Iru Kingdom).

In a statement released by Abayomi Daramola, Balogun of Iru-Land, the Oniru extended heartfelt congratulations to all the recipients, emphasizing that the selection process was rigorous and thorough. The titles will be conferred at the Aafin Oba Oniru palace in Victoria Island, Lagos.

“To mark the fifth-year anniversary of his ascension to the revered throne of his forebears as the 15th Oniru of Iru-land, and after a rigorous selection process, His Royal Majesty Oba Abdul-Wasiu Omogbolahan Lawal CON [Abisogun II],” the statement read. “Upon the recommendation of the Oniru-in-Council, has issued a Royal Decree approving the conferment of respective honorary Chieftaincy titles on these eminent and distinguished citizens.”

The title of Erelu Asa of Iru Kingdom is a distinguished chieftaincy honor within the Iru Kingdom, located in Lagos State, Nigeria. This title is conferred by the Oniru of Iru Kingdom, the traditional ruler of the area, to individuals who have made significant contributions to the community, particularly in promoting and preserving cultural heritage.

The term “Erelu Asa” can be interpreted as “Custodian of Culture” or “Matron of Tradition,” highlighting the role’s emphasis on upholding and promoting the rich cultural traditions of the Yoruba people. The Erelu Asa plays a vital role in cultural events, traditional ceremonies, and serves as an ambassador for the kingdom’s heritage.
