The announcement that Idris Elba will take on the role of Okonkwo, the iconic wrestling champion from Chinua Achebe’s seminal novel Things Fall Apart, has set social media ablaze. Fans of both the book and African cinema are voicing a mix of enthusiasm and skepticism over whether Idris Elba is the ideal choice for such a legendary character.

Prominent Nollywood actor Lateef Adedimeji weighed in on the debate during a recent appearance on Nollywood on Radio. He defended the casting, suggesting that producers may be aiming for broader international appeal rather than questioning the talent pool within Nollywood. “I am sure it is not because we don’t have actors who can play that role,” Adedimeji remarked. “There is something else at play here—perhaps it’s about marketability or ensuring global acceptance. But it’s definitely not a reflection of a lack of talent in Nollywood.”

Adedimeji further emphasized the wealth of talent within the Nigerian film industry, asserting that it shouldn’t be overshadowed by the decision to cast an international star. “We are hugely talented. If it’s about talent, they shouldn’t even go there. The casting of Idris Elba is likely a strategic move to ensure global appeal, not a suggestion that we don’t have the capability to pull off the role.”
