Maduka Okoye appointed as an ambassador for Enugu state

Nigeria’s goalkeeper Maduka Okoye has been appointed as a state ambassador by the governor of Enugu state.

Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, has named Super Eagles goalkeeper Maduka Okoye as a state ambassador, recognizing his football achievements and his vision for youth development.

The announcement came during Okoye’s visit to the Lion Building on Tuesday, June 24, 2025, where he and Governor Mbah explored collaborative efforts to harness sports as a tool for empowering young people and driving economic growth in the state.

Governor Mbah explained that the appointment followed Okoye’s intention to establish a charitable foundation and a football academy in Enugu.

“It was a pleasure welcoming Super Eagles and Udinese goalkeeper Maduka Okoye to the Lion Building today,” the governor said. “A proud son of Enugu, he continues to shine on both national and international platforms, and he is eager to give back to his roots.”

He added that the state government would allocate land for the proposed academy and extended an invitation to Okoye to take part in the upcoming Enugu International Marathon.

“In honour of his accomplishments and his commitment to youth development, I am proud to appoint him as an ambassador of Enugu State. He will be a role model for our children, especially in our Smart Green Schools,” Mbah said.

Okoye expressed his appreciation for the warm reception and the honour, calling the occasion deeply meaningful.

“I’m truly grateful to be welcomed back by His Excellency Dr. Peter Mbah,” he said. “It was a memorable encounter focused on Enugu’s growth through sports and economic initiatives.”

He also praised the governor’s development agenda and reaffirmed his willingness to contribute through his upcoming projects.
