NBC has banned all Nigerian broadcast stations from airing Eedris Abdulkareem’s politically charged new song, Tell Your Papa, over concerns about its content.
The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has officially banned Nigerian rapper Eedris Abdulkareem’s latest protest song, Tell Your Papa, from being aired on broadcast stations across the country.
In a letter dated April 9, 2025, the regulatory body deemed the politically charged song “inappropriate for broadcast,” citing Section 3.1.8 of the Nigeria Broadcasting Code. The NBC stated the track contained content considered objectionable and urged stations to maintain responsible broadcasting by avoiding its airplay.
“The National Broadcasting Commission has identified the song ‘Tell Your Papa’ by Eedris Abdulkareem… as content deemed inappropriate for broadcast,” the letter read, warning stations against airing the song.
The controversial single directly targets Seyi Tinubu, son of President Bola Tinubu, urging him to confront the realities of everyday Nigerians and communicate the nation’s struggles to his father. The song highlights deepening economic woes and security concerns while critiquing the younger Tinubu’s recent statement praising his father as “the greatest president in Nigeria’s history.”
Meanwhile, this isn’t Eedris Abdulkareem’s first clash with authorities over his politically-driven music. His 2004 hit Jaga Jaga was similarly banned for its bold commentary on government shortcomings, cementing his reputation as a voice of protest within the industry.
Lastly, as of the time of this report, neither Eedris Abdulkareem nor Seyi Tinubu has issued a public response to the ban.
