NFF breaks silence on Victor Osimhen’s saga with Finidi George

The body governing football in Nigeria, the NFF (Nigeria Football Federation ) has debunked information circulating in the media that Victor Osimhen has been suspended from the Super Eagles.

The Napoli forward player has been in the news since the weekend of June 15, 2024, after he released a video on his official Instagram account. Victor Osimhen reacted to news he saw on the Internet that the former coach of the Super Eagles, Finid George, was accused of intentionally missing the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying games against Benin Republic and South Africa.

The Nigeria Football Federation has described reports in some online publications on Wednesday, June 19, 2024, as false. NFF General Secretary, Dr. Mohammed Sanusi expressed amazement at the reports, saying the Federation has neither instructed a process nor has a process been concluded to ban the player from the national team.

He said,

“The NFF hereby implores the media to join hands with the body to positively resolve issues and then focus on the big picture all the time, rather than needlessly escalate certain matters. There was no official communication from the NFF, yet some persons have gone to town to talk about a ban on Osimhen from the National Team. This is not good at all. Our focus presently is to resolve all matters around the Super Eagles and be able to look ahead with confidence to the 2025 AFCON qualifiers and the remaining six matches of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification series. This is not the time to spread falsehood and foul the public space the more.”

The NFF are currently working around the clock to find a replacement for Finidi ahead of the next round of qualifying games. The Super Eagles are currently in fifth place ahead of the last-placed team, with just three points from their first four games ahead of the last-placed team, Zimbabwe.
