The Nigerian Football Federation ( NFF) have announced that they will be appointing a foreign expert to be in charge of the Super Eagles ahead of the AFCON 2025 and 2026 World Cup qualifying games.

The decision was announced after the Executive Committee rose from its board meeting on Wednesday, June 12, 2024, and it was agreed that the NFF will employ an expatriate Technical Adviser for the Super Eagles in the coming weeks, ahead of the remaining qualifying matches. According to reports from the NFF, this decision was taken after the Super Eagles performed woefully in both of their World Cup qualifying games against South Africa and the Benin Republic which ended in a draw and defeat respectively under the new head coach of the team, Finidi George.

The Committee resolved to beef up the NFF Technical Department with more qualitative hands. Equally, the Technical and Development Sub-Committee will be re-jigged with immediate effect. They also apologised to Nigerians for the poor returns in four out of 10 matches in the ongoing qualification series for the 2026 FIFA World Cup finals, the Executive Committee assured to put necessary measures in place to ensure a better-prepared squad ahead of the AFCON 2025 qualifiers in September this year and the resumption of the World Cup qualifiers in March 2025.

The NFF President, Ibrahim Gusau also expressed his disappointment with the Super Eagles’ results in the first four games of the qualifying series.

What did the NFF President say about the Super Eagles?

“It’s a very sad moment for Nigerian football. We cannot run away from that. But all I want to assure is that we are working tirelessly in conjunction with the minister to see that we come out with holistic measures that will change the face of the entire system so that we can move forward. Don’t forget, it is still possible and I want to assure you that we are going to fight it to the latter and Nigeria will qualify for the World Cup. This is not something I will just say it now but very soon you are going to see major steps that NFF would come out with and by the grace of God, those measures that we are going to take will lead us to qualify for the next World Cup.”

Will Finidi George remain as the coach of the Super Eagles?

However, it is yet to be announced if Finidi George will work under the foreign manager or he would be sacked.

What is Nigeria’s position in the World Cup qualifying group?

Nigeria has secured just three points out of the maximum of 12, occupying the fifth position with South Africa top of the group.
