Super Eagles and Nottingham Forest forward player, Taiwo Awoniyi has been placed on an induced coma following the recent incident that occurred in the game against Leicester City.

Taiwo Awoniyi is receiving intensive care following surgery on the serious abdominal injury that he sustained during Nottingham Forest’s game against Leicester City on Sunday, May 11, 2025.

What happened to Taiwo Awoniyi?

The Nigerian international forward was taken to hospital on Monday, after the club’s medical staff highlighted the need for urgent treatment for the injury, which was sustained as Awoniyi collided painfully with a post as they were in search of the winning goal after the foxes had equalised earlier in the also second half.

However, the incident could have been avoided if the linesman on the day had raised the flag earlier when it was crystal clear that the Nigerian was in an offside position.

Forest also released a statement as ot concerns the injury situation of Taiwo Awoniyi. In the statement released by the club, Awoniyi has undergone surgery and is recovering well.

“Nottingham Forest can confirm that Taiwo Awoniyi is recovering well so far, following urgent surgery on a serious abdominal injury sustained during Sunday’s match. The seriousness of his injury is a powerful reminder of the physical risks in the game and why a player’s health and well-being must always come first. At Nottingham Forest, this principle is not just policy for us; it is the deeply held belief and conviction of our owner. To Evangelos Marinakis, this isn’t just a football club, it is a family.”

The supporters of Forest and the Super Eagles will hope that Awoniyi will get back to full fitness very soon.
