Popular Nigerian rapper, Tochukwu Gbubemi Ojogwu, better known as Odumodublvck, made headlines at the 17th Headies Awards after refusing to leave the stage when his microphone was cut off mid-speech while accepting his Next Rated Artist award.
The prestigious award ceremony was held on Saturday, April 27, in Lagos. It celebrated outstanding achievements in the Nigerian music industry, with several top acts taking home major honors.
During the emotional moment at the 17th Headies Awards, Odumodublvck mounted the stage accompanied by his mother and over 11 close associates who have supported him throughout his career. However, while delivering his acceptance speech, organisers abruptly muted his microphone and signaled for him to leave the stage due to time constraints.
In a bold move, the rapper stood his ground and refused to exit. Following the brief standoff, his microphone was eventually restored, allowing him to complete his heartfelt message.
Addressing the audience, Odumodublvck said: “Against all odds, I have pushed against so many barriers like this. Couple of years back, there were so many feelings we could not express through our music. The world clap us down, ‘you can’t be this,’ ‘you can’t speak like this,’ ‘you can’t do this,’ ‘you can’t release music in this way.’ Me standing here today is proof that all those things are fallacies. It only would have been possible through my Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, who has been there for me through thick and thin. Tonight, God has shown that God reigns.”
The moment quickly went viral online, with many fans praising the rapper for his boldness and unapologetic stance.
Lastly, Odumodublvck also won Best Rap Single for his collaboration Cast with Shallipopi at the event. He has had a remarkable rise from the underground rap scene in Abuja to becoming one of Nigeria’s leading rap voices.
