Nigerian comedian Okey Bakassi has been officially presented as the traditional ruler of the Umuihuocha Autonomous Community in Mbaise, Imo State.
Now bearing the regal title His Royal Highness Eze Okechukwu Onyegbule, the OKWE II of Umuihuocha Obohia Autonomous Community.
The special presentation ceremony, rich in Igbo customs, drums, and celebratory dance, marked a new chapter not just for the comic legend but for the Umuihuocha people. The community, recognized as an autonomous entity within the vibrant Mbaise region, gathered in large numbers to witness the historic occasion.
Best known for his sharp wit and celebrated performances on screen and stage, Bakassi’s transition from showbiz to kingship has drawn national attention. But for locals, it represents a return home for a native son with deep roots in the land he now leads.
“This is more than a title—it is a call to serve, to preserve culture, and to unite my people,” Eze Okechukwu said during the ceremony. “Comedy brought me recognition, but tradition brings me purpose.”
With his coronation, Okey Bakassi joins the ranks of Igbo monarchs tasked with upholding community values, resolving disputes, and promoting development. His rare fusion of fame and traditional authority is expected to bring a fresh perspective to community leadership.
