Nigerian rap icon Olamide has once again proven why he’s considered one of the most gifted minds in African music, this time through a spontaneous studio moment with singer Lojay.
In a recent interview, filmmaker and host Korty EO shared an astonishing behind-the-scenes moment that showcases the YBNL boss’s effortless creativity, and how it came through for singer Lojay in a moment of need.
Speaking on her show Flow, Korty recounted how Lojay, known for his emotive vocals and experimental sound, was battling writer’s block while working on a song. In a moment of frustration, he reached out to Korty, telling her he had just witnessed what felt like a miracle. The miracle? Olamide casually walking into the kitchen, chewing something, and returning five minutes later with a verse that would blow Lojay away.
Korty narrated, “He said he was struggling with a verse, and Olamide just entered the kitchen, came back chewing something, and said, ‘What do you think about this?’ And it was perfect.”
The incident adds another layer to Olamide’s legendary status, not just as a hitmaker for himself, but as a creative powerhouse and support system for the new generation. His uncanny ability to deliver on the spot has earned him praise from both peers and protégés over the years.
Backing up Korty’s account, a man identified in the interview as Mr. Ojo, described as Olamide’s close friend and A&R, shared a telling detail about the rapper’s intense passion for music. “What people don’t understand is… music is his hobby. He doesn’t have any other hobby. He likes only music,” he said, reinforcing the idea that Olamide’s genius is born from an all-consuming love for his craft.
This story not only highlights Olamide’s lyrical brilliance but also paints a vivid picture of the quiet ways he continues to shape the Nigerian music landscape, from the studio, the kitchen, or wherever inspiration strikes.
