Pep Guardiola has reacted to Kevin de Bruyne’s decision to leave Manchester City following the expiration of his contract at the end of this season ( 2024/25).
Guardiola was speaking during his pre-match press conference ahead of this weekend’s Manchester derby in the Premier League. The interview was an emotional one for the Spaniard who would be seeing one of his most senior players leave the club.
What did Pep Guardiola say about Kevin De Bruyne?
“A sad day and a happy day for the fact the pleasure personally we lived this time with him, what he gave to all of us, his humanity. It is not necessary to tell his success with us in the last decade – impossible to imagine without him. A sad day because a part of us is leaving. When Vincent [Kompany] left or Sergio [Aguero] left or David Silva left, their contribution… I can say more names, these three are examples. It’s a sad day. But still we have 10 games, and hopefully 11, six games at home that still we can enjoy with our fans and he will get I am pretty sure the love and recognition that all of us, fans of course, that he deserves.
He continued,
An emotional moment. With Sergio [Aguero] for example, it wasn’t easy for me to tell him we wouldn’t continue, because there are players that have done for this club we’re living right now. This situation is always so difficult; emotions are there, they give us too much. Can you imagine the way we play and how incredibly nice some seasons have been without Kevin?! With Leroy [Sane] or Raheem [Sterling] running in-behind, or the moments for Sergio in the pockets, or when we dropped in with Gabriel [Jesus] and all the strikers there – they were benefitting from the talents and skills from Kevin! 280 goals and assists, it’s huge.”
Manchester City supporters will hope that Kevin de Bruyne will end his season on a high at the club by winning the FA Cup and finishing in the UEFA Champions League position.
