The manager of Manchester City, Pep Guardiola, has confirmed that he told his players not to be relaxed going into the final league game of the season.
Guardiola was speaking at his penultimate pre-match press conference ahead of the game against West Ham United at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday, May 19, 2024. According to him, his players should not expect Arsenal to drop points against Everton at the Emirates Stadium.
Guardiola said he told them not to expect a repeat of Aston Villa defeating Arsenal or Crystal Palace defeating Liverpool when Arsenal hosts Everton. He emphasized that waiting for Arsenal to lose points to become champions is a wrong mindset.
What did Guardiola say?
“What I said to the players, in the last two or three games that the chances in one weekend, Aston Villa winning in the Emirates against Arsenal, Crystal Palace in Liverpool isn’t going to happen again. They give us that certain moment, and the destiny is in our hands. If you are waiting that they are going to drop (points) to be champions, then you are wrong. If you are thinking Arsenal is going to lose or drop points in Old Trafford, forget about it. Forget about it. If you are thinking that Everton is going to do something (on Sunday against Arsenal), forget about it. The chance, they give us. Expected it maybe earlier, they give us. Now, it’s our point. And we did it; we did it in Crystal Palace, we did it against Wolves, or we did it against Fulham and Spurs, and we have the last. They know it’s win or win, otherwise, Arsenal will be Champions. It’s not more complicated than that.”
Manchester City are two points going into the game against West Ham United. Anything less than a win against the Hammers will see the trophy go to the Emirates if Arsenal beat Everton.
Manchester City are on the verge of creating history by winning another Premier League title, which would be their fourth successive, a feat never before achieved in the history of the competition.
