Lead singer of the Grammy Award-winning reggae group, Morgan Heritage, Peter Anthony Morgan has passed away at the age of 46.
This is as confirmed by the Morgan family in an official statement on social media (X) on Sunday, February 25, 2024.
Known fondly as Peetah, Peter was hailed as a cherished father, son, brother, and musical talent, leaving an enduring legacy in the reggae music sphere.
A pivotal figure in reggae music, Peter, along with seven of his siblings, co-founded Morgan Heritage in 1994. Initially starting as a septet, the group later transitioned into a quintet, captivating audiences with their distinctive sound and powerful messages.
Teaming up with esteemed Jamaican producer, Bobby Digital, Morgan Heritage released notable albums such as Protect Us Jah (1997) and Don’t Haffi Dread (1999), showcasing their dedication to the harmonious traditions of reggae and profound lyrical content.
Throughout their illustrious career, Morgan Heritage’s music resonated globally, blending classic reggae vibes with contemporary influences. Their performance at New York City’s Irving Plaza in 1999 earned praise from a New York Times music critic for their authentic singing style and socially conscious themes reminiscent of 1970s reggae.
The pinnacle of their success arrived at the 2015 Grammy Awards, where Morgan Heritage’s album Strictly Roots secured the prestigious accolade for Best Reggae Album of the Year. Subsequently, their follow-up album, Avrakedabra, received another nomination in the same category two years later, although it was surpassed by Stony Hill by Damian Marley, son of reggae icon Bob Marley.
In the wake of Peter’s passing, the Morgan family has requested privacy as they navigate this period of mourning and healing, emphasizing the profound impact of Peter’s legacy both within their family and the wider reggae community.
