Nigerian street-hop singer, Portable, has addressed a lingering accusation of phone theft, shedding new light on an incident from his early music career under Destiny Records.
The statement, shared on his Instagram page on Sunday, July 20, 2025 was titled “Official Statement on Behalf of Portable” and aimed to clear his name while warning other young artists about exploitation in the industry.
According to Portable, the phone theft incident traces back to his time with Destiny Records, a label owned by Ija Omode, who now serves as Vice Chairman of the Union of Road Transport Workers in Ogun State. During this period, Portable said he was given a phone by the label strictly for professional purposes.
However, following what he described as a lack of support and professional development, the Zazoo Zeh crooner said he made the decision to part ways with the label. Portable claimed his exit was met with hostility, stating that associates of the label forcefully collected the phone, hacked into it, and then falsely accused him of theft.
The situation escalated when Portable was allegedly beaten, stripped, and publicly humiliated, an incident that was filmed and circulated online by media outlet Naijakit. He expressed deep regret that, despite his eventual fame, those responsible are yet to publicly retract the damaging narrative, although some have reached out to him privately.
In his statement, Portable called the ordeal a deliberate act of intimidation and bullying, not just against him but as a warning sign of how young, aspiring artists can be mistreated in the industry. He emphasized that his intention in speaking out is not to seek revenge but to clear his name and protect others from going through similar experiences.
Portable closed his message with a call for truth, justice, and transparency, using hashtags like #JusticeForPortable and #EndLabelBullying to rally awareness.
The post has since triggered widespread conversation across social media, as fans and industry observers reflect on the treatment of emerging artists and the hidden struggles that often go unseen behind the scenes.
