South African producer and DJ Prince Kaybee has reignited long-standing debates in the local hip-hop scene after bluntly questioning Cassper Nyovest’s credibility as a rapper.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Prince Kaybee reacted to a user’s confession that read:
“I’m ready to admit something I’ve denied for too long…. AKA was a better rapper than Cassper 🤧.”
The hitmaker didn’t hold back, responding:
“I don’t understand how ANYONE in this world thinks Cassper is a musician nor a rapper, WTF man 😕.”
When another X user pressed further, asking, “What is he to you?”, Kaybee gave a short but cutting reply:
“A gimmick.”
The comments have since sparked heated debates online, with fans and critics of Cassper weighing in. While some agreed with Kaybee’s sentiment, others accused him of being unnecessarily disrespectful towards one of South Africa’s most commercially successful hip-hop artists.
Cassper Nyovest, known for hits like Doc Shebeleza, Tito Mboweni, and Siyathandana, has often been praised for his ability to cross over into mainstream audiences. However, critics have long argued that his commercial approach and versatility come at the cost of lyrical depth — a point Prince Kaybee’s comments appear to echo.
The tension between South African artists and the constant comparisons between Cassper and the late AKA have been part of the hip-hop conversation for years. Kaybee’s remarks now add another layer to that narrative, and the online discourse shows no signs of slowing down.
Whether Cassper responds to these latest jabs remains to be seen, but one thing is certain — the “gimmick” comment has already left a mark on the hip-hop gossip mill.
