Former world number one tennis player, Rafael Nadal has announced his retirement from the sport after his illustrious career on the court.

Rafael Nadal announced the expected news on his official social media accounts on Thursday, October 10, 2024. According to the Spaniard, the Davis Cup will be his last tennis tournament which will be played from November 19-24, 2024.

What did Rafael Nadal say about his retirement?

Nadal started the video emotionally where, he confirmed that the past few years have been difficult for him, and this was the right time for him to hang his racket.

“The reality is that it has been some difficult years, these last two especially. I don’t think I have been able to play without limitations. It is obviously a difficult decision, one that has taken me some time to make. But in this life, everything has a beginning and an end. I am very excited that my last tournament will be the final of the Davis Cup and representing my country. I think I have come full circle since one of my first great joys as a professional tennis player was the Davis Cup final in Seville in 2004. I think it is the appropriate time to put an end to a career that has been long and much more successful than I could have ever imagined.”

How many trophies did Nadal win as a tennis player?

He won 22 grand slam titles ahead of Roger Federer and behind Novak Djokovic, 14 of those titles he won at Roland Garros which earned him the name, ” King of Clay”

Nadal is also a four-time US Open champion and won both the Australian Open and Wimbledon twice. He also won Olympic singles and doubles gold and helped Spain to five Davis Cup titles, most recently in 2019.

Nadal will go down in history as one of the greatest players to ever play the sport on the tennis court.
