Nigerian Afrobeats star Divine Ikubor, popularly known as Rema, took a heartwarming moment during his sold-out show at Madison Square Garden (MSG) in New York to honour music icon and Mavin Records founder, Michael Collins Ajereh, famously known as Don Jazzy.
In a video from Madison Square Garden making waves on social media, Don Jazzy was seen joining Rema on stage before attempting to exit quietly. However, the 24-year-old hitmaker stopped him in his tracks, seizing the opportunity to publicly celebrate the veteran producer’s enduring impact on the Nigerian music industry.
Addressing the massive crowd, Rema emphasized the importance of giving industry pioneers their deserved accolades while they are still here. He praised Don Jazzy for his countless, often unspoken contributions to the careers of many Nigerian artists and the growth of the Afrobeats genre globally.
“I want to give you your flowers right in front of these many people… There are so many things you’ve done for the game that you don’t talk about, that people don’t talk about. You have changed so many lives and I just want to say I’m grateful from the bottom of my heart and I love you so much,” Rema declared, drawing cheers from the audience.
The moment has since sparked widespread admiration online, with fans and fellow artists applauding Rema for acknowledging one of the key figures behind the success of many Afrobeats stars.
