Afrobeat singer Seun Kuti has made explosive claims about the Nigerian music industry, suggesting that some artists are involved in money laundering.
Basically, in a video rant, Kuti expressed frustration about the perceived wealth disparity among musicians. He questioned how some colleagues, with limited discographies, can afford luxurious lifestyles, including owning hotels and driving high-end vehicles like G-wagons and Rolls-Royces.
“Where is the money coming from?” Kuti asked, implying that some artists’ wealth is suspicious.
However, he cited his own 20-year career, struggling to build a single house. So, he said this as evidence that the music industry doesn’t generate sufficient income to support such lavish spending.
Additionally, Kuti referenced crossdresser Bobrisky’s recent legal issues, noting that money laundering charges were dropped from the case.
Also, Seun Kuti urged youths to critically examine the reality of the music industry and the actions of some artists alleging they might be involved in money laundering.
“If I speak out, they’ll label it jealousy,” Kuti said, emphasizing that his concerns transcend personal envy.
Meanwhile, he clarified that while he doesn’t condone crime, he’s particularly troubled by artists potentially exploiting their own community.
“This is not about being poor or rich; it’s about the game being played,” Kuti concluded.
