Nigerian singer, Seun Kuti has unleashed a scathing criticism against the Nigerian elites after viewing a video showing youths sleeping at a sports betting shop.

The video, which has been circulating online, depicted a group of young men spending the night at the gambling establishment (betting shops), presumably awaiting the outcome of their bets.

Expressing his dismay, Seun Kuti reposted the video on Friday, March 22, 2024, directing his ire towards the Nigerian elites whom he accused of being responsible for the creation of the betting platform. He argued that instead of positively impacting the lives of young people, these elites have facilitated access to destructive activities like betting, ultimately ruining the futures of countless youths.

In his impassioned caption, Seun Kuti denounced the elites‘ claims of investing in the community, highlighting their failure to address pressing issues such as education and healthcare accessibility for the less privileged. He emphasized the irony of making destructive habits like gambling affordable while essential services remain out of reach for many.

“And you do this to your people and call it an investment, you say u dey help them?! If una build school una go put school fees poor people can’t pay. If una build hospital una go put bill wey poor people can’t pay. Build clubs they can’t attend but the one wey go destroy their life una make am affordable abi? AFFORDABLE DESTRUCTION. Una no go last oooo. Na ancestors talk am. #getthesax,” he wrote.

Concluding his message with a warning, Seun Kuti asserted that such exploitative practices would not endure, invoking the wisdom of ancestors to showcase his point. He urged for a shift in priorities towards initiatives that uplift rather than undermine the youth.
