Seun Kuti reveals why some Nigerians follow Jesus for money

Grammy-nominated musician, Seun Kuti has shared his thoughts on Christians in Nigeria and their pursuit of wealth.

Kuti shared his insights during the popular podcast ‘Spill with Phyna,’ on Wednesday, January 17, 2024, where he discussed his concerns about Nigerian Christians.

The self-acclaimed ‘Big bird’ points out that the reason many individuals unquestionably follow their religious leaders, despite evident flaws, is due to a lack of sufficient knowledge about the Bible. He contends that a significant number of Christians have strayed from practicing the gospel, and their primary expectation from Christianity is centered around acquiring wealth.

In his words, “One of the things wey dey confuse me the most about Christianity today is actually prosperity gospel. You know, the gospel of prosperity because that one show… That’s why anytime all these big pastors dem do bad things or anything people still dey support them blindly. I understand say nobody really dey follow the book, you know, people dey follow personality.”

In Kuti’s view, if Jesus were to return, many Christians might still criticize him and even call for his demise. He believes that, in Nigeria, people embrace Christianity for two main reasons: either to amass wealth or with the intention of reaching heaven to meet Jesus.

“I believe say if Jesu Christ come this world back now, talk some kain things, people go still pursue am, try kill am again. I dey tell you. Because Jesus Christ by himself, the oga of the top, the oga patapata of the Christians, the oga of everything say, he say it is harder, no it is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter into heaven. And every Christian in Nigeria just wants to be rich. So, it is either you people believe in Jesus and you want to go and meet him in Heaven, or you are just using this Christianity as a way to be rich. It’s obvious,” He stated.

The singer’s remarks offer a thought-provoking perspective on the motivations behind the practice of Christianity in the Nigerian context.
