Afrobeat star and outspoken activist, Seun Kuti, has weighed in on the arrest of controversial online critic, VeryDarkMan (VDM), offering new claims about the forces behind his detention.

In a recent statement, Seun Kuti alleged that Nigeria’s powerful religious leaders and certain financial institutions are responsible for the critic’s ordeal, accusing them of using their influence to silence voices that challenge the status quo.

According to Seun Kuti, his information came from a conversation with Deji Adeyanju, the lawyer representing VeryDarkMan. Kuti revealed that both he and VDM are being represented by the same legal counsel, as he is also currently engaged in a separate legal battle against Guaranty Trust Bank (GTBank) and other banks.

“VDM’s lawyer is my lawyer, and we’re handling a case against GTB and other banks. To me, there’s no good bank in Nigeria,” Kuti stated.

He further claimed that religious authorities in the country are actively involved in suppressing VeryDarkMan’s voice for speaking what he described as “uncomfortable truths.”

“As the Federal Government runs Nigeria, these big pastors run it too. It’s the so-called people of God that are fighting VeryDarkMan for telling the truth,” Seun Kuti added.

VeryDarkMan’s arrest, carried out by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in Abuja, has continued to stir outrage online, with citizens demanding his release while authorities remain tight-lipped on the reasons behind his detention. Earlier reports also implicated GTBank in the case, though official details remain scarce.

Amid the controversy, social media chatter has suggested possible links between VDM’s arrest and a gospel singer, rumored to be Mercy Chinwo, who is currently embroiled in a legal dispute with her former record label boss, Eezee Tee. However, no confirmed connection has been established.

As the situation unfolds, Seun Kuti’s claims have added a new dimension to the case, highlighting concerns about the alleged role of influential religious and financial institutions in targeting outspoken voices in Nigeria.
