Former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson will be leaving his ambassadorial role at the end of this current season (2024/25).

The Telegraph confirmed on its official website on Tuesday, October 15, 2024, that the reason why Sir Alex Ferguson will be leaving his role is to help the club cut costs as they look to balance their financial records. INEOS has continued its cost-cutting programme by ending its financial commitment to Sir Alex Ferguson, who is the most successful manager in the club’s history.

Sir Alex has remained a United director on the club’s football board, which has appeared to be a largely ceremonial role held by some of the club’s legends in the past. The role has previously featured Sir Bobby Charlton (before he passed away in 2023), as well as former chief executive David Gill and non-executive director Michael Edelson.

The Scottish international is not a member of the club’s official board which includes the six Glazer siblings, as well as INEOS co-owner John Reece and INEOS Sport’s chairman Rob Nevin, in addition to two independent directors Robert Leitao and John Hooks. According to reports, he will always be welcome at Old Trafford and the decision has been taken amicably following a direct conversation between the Scot and co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

How many trophies did Sir Alex Ferguson win for Manchester United?

He won 13 Premier League titles, two Champions Leagues, five FA Cups and four League Cups amongst others?
