Nigerian rapper Speed Darlington has been granted bail after spending nearly a month in police custody. Darlington, known for his bold and often controversial social media posts, was arrested on November 27 while performing at a show in Owerri, Imo state.
The rapper’s arrest stirred controversy after human rights lawyer Deji Adeyanju claimed that Afrofusion superstar Burna Boy was involved in the incident. Darlington had recently made headlines for taunting Burna Boy over his association with US music mogul Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs, who is currently facing multiple allegations of sexual exploitation and human trafficking.
He had publicly questioned Burna Boy’s Grammy win for his album Twice As Tall, which was executive produced by Diddy. The rapper made provocative claims about the nature of Diddy and Burna Boy’s relationship, suggesting a sexual connection between the two, which sparked a wave of online debates.
Following his arrest, Darlington’s legal representative, Stan Alieke, revealed that the rapper’s request for bail had been denied for several weeks. The lawyer accused the police of infringing upon his client’s constitutional rights, calling for his release.
Alieke took to Instagram on Monday to announce the good news, sharing a brief update that Darlington had been granted bail. “Apki has been granted bail by the court,” he wrote, without providing further details.
This isn’t the first time Speed Darlington has found himself in legal trouble. In October, he was arrested in Abuja but was released after spending five days in police custody.
