In order to celebrate a decade with arguably one of the biggest genre exports out of Africa, Amapiano, Spotify has revealed the most streamed songs and artists in Nigeria under the genre.

In 2023, the South African dance genre Amapiano hit over 1.4 billion streams on Spotify. The genre’s influence on South Africa’s music culture has led to a global Amapiano frenzy, inspiring dance challenges, collaborations, and fusions.

Originating from South African townships to the global stages, A Decade of Amapiano tracks the genre’s ascend to the music throne showcasing the journey and highlighting some of the genre’s key artists. Speaking on the growth of Amapaino in Africa, Phiona Okumu, Spotify’s Head of Music in Sub-Saharan Africa revealed, “One of the most affirming parts of watching Amapiano explode over the past decade is seeing how people use it for self-expression.’’

The love and excitement for the style of music also showed its popularity or relevance in Nigeria as a surge in the listenership by 181% occurred between 2023 and 2024. The popularity and dominance of the sound also saw Spotify launch the initiative A Decade of Amapiano, a site looking at the past decade of Amapiano and its different key influences for anyone wishing to learn more about the genre’s origins, sounds and future.

According to Spotify, the COVID-19 pandemic has been a game-changing year for the growth of Amapiano on the platform. In 2020, the genre achieved its first 100 million streams, followed by an impressive 300 million streams in 2021, further solidifying its rising popularity.

In June 2023, Spotify launched Afrobeats: Journey of a Billion Streams, a website dedicated to celebrating the Afrobeats genre. Spotify, through A Decade of Amapiano, reinforces its commitment to supporting the growth of homegrown music genres in Africa.
