Nigerian singer Spyro, known for his hit song Who’s Your Guy, has sparked controversy with recent revelations about his struggles in the music industry.

In an appearance on the Echo Room podcast, Spyro, whose real name is Oludipe Oluwasanmi David, shared insights into his clashes with music industry figures and the discrimination he faces as a vocal Christian artist.

The artist accused Davido’s manager, Asa Asika, of stalling the release of his 2022 collaboration with Davido on the track Billing. He claimed preparations were complete, but delays caused by Asika prevented the song’s release. This follows another public fallout where Spyro alleged that Ubi Franklin tricked him into performing at Iyanya’s birthday party. Franklin, in response, claimed Spyro still owes him 10% of the performance fee.

The singer also opened up about financial struggles during his time with Paul Okoye’s label. Despite being signed to the billionaire, Spyro revealed that he often had to borrow money and refund it, raising questions about the support he received.

Spyro, who brands himself as “Jesus Boy,” highlighted the challenges of proclaiming his faith in the entertainment industry. He alleged that declaring Christ publicly has led to a lack of support from peers. “Once you come out and declare Christ publicly, you enter a war,” he said, adding that he often wonders why his achievements don’t receive the same recognition as others.

The singer shared advice from R&B artist-turned-pastor Banky W, who warned him about the difficulties of mixing faith with the music business. According to Spyro, Banky W told him his problems in the industry began after he openly proclaimed Christ, advising him to be ready for the challenges that come with such a stance.

Spyro’s revelations have stirred discussions online, with fans divided over his claims. While some applaud his openness, others question the motives behind his statements. Despite the controversies, Spyro continues to embrace his faith and identity as “Jesus Boy.”

“Once you come out and declare Christ publicly, you enter a war… Banky W told me that his problem started in the industry the moment he proclaimed Christ…”
