Lagos is gearing up for a landmark event in African theatre as the inaugural Lagos International Theatre Festival (LITF) opens its doors on November 14, 2024.
For four days, theatre enthusiasts will be treated to 25 unique stage plays, including three internationally acclaimed showpieces, across four iconic venues—Terra Kulture Arena, MUSON Centre, University of Lagos, and Glover Hall.
The lineup of plays curated by Bolanle Austen-Peters-owned LITF brings an impressive mix of Nigerian and African storytelling and dynamic productions from the United States, South Africa, and Zambia, offering audiences an unmissable exploration of cultural narratives and emotional depth.
LITF explores diverse themes and genres
Theatre lovers can anticipate an array of genres and themes that celebrate creativity, identity, and resilience. Nigerian plays, enriched with authentic African storytelling, are set to portray social, political, and emotional narratives that resonate with both local and global audiences.
In addition to local talents, international showpieces like Satchmo at the Waldorf from the USA, a moving portrayal of jazz legend Louis Armstrong, Metsi from South Africa, an intense drama about love and survival, and Without a Kiss from Zambia which explores themes of domestic violence and social injustice, promise to add a global dimension to the festival’s offerings.
Each of the four venues will become a dynamic festival ground, featuring vibrant vendor stalls, food villages, sponsor booths, and interactive activities for all ages, transforming LITF into an immersive and family-friendly experience.
Other reasons you shouldn’t miss LITF
This festival is more than a showcase of plays; it’s a celebration of the transformative power of live theatre and a rare chance to engage with world-class storytelling on African soil.
LITF is designed to foster a cultural exchange that unites traditional and contemporary theatre, creating a bridge between Lagos and the global theatre scene. The festival also offers practical workshops at the John Randle Centre for Yoruba Culture, equipping aspiring creatives with skills to excel in the arts.
A Visionary Beginning for Lagos Theatre
Supported by Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and curated by celebrated producer Bolanle Austen-Peters, LITF aims to cement Lagos’ place as a cultural destination with a vibrant arts calendar. “This festival celebrates our rich heritage and signals to the world that Lagos is a global stage for creativity,” said Sanwo-Olu.
As the curtains rise on November 14, LITF promises a remarkable experience for theatre lovers, industry stakeholders, and anyone ready to witness the power of storytelling.
