Super Eagles icon Peter ‘Dodomayana’ Rufai dies at 62

Super Eagles of Nigeria’s legend and icon Peter Rufai also known as ‘Dodomayana’ has died at the age of 62.

The Super Eagles in an official statement confirmed that the country’s football space is mourning the loss of one of Nigeria’s footballing greats, legendary goalkeeper Peter Rufai, who passed away on Thursday, July 3rd, 2025.

According to Channels TV the goalkeeping legend died after a brief illness.

Fondly known as “Dodomayana,” Rufai was a towering figure in Nigerian football and a key member of the squad that clinched the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations title.

Rufai’s impact extended far beyond that historic victory. He was the first-choice goalkeeper and captain during Nigeria’s debut appearance at the 1994 FIFA World Cup, helping the team reach the Round of 16.

Over his illustrious career, Rufai earned 65 caps for the Super Eagles, firmly establishing himself as one of the country’s finest custodians between the posts.

Known for his exceptional penalty-saving ability and leadership, Rufai also made rare contributions to the scoreboard, once scoring a penalty during the 1994 AFCON qualifiers.

In a statement on their official X account, the Super Eagles said, “We mourn the passing of legendary Super Eagles goalkeeper, Peter Rufai, a giant of Nigerian football and a 1994 AFCON champion. Your legacy lives on between the sticks and beyond. Rest well, Peter Rufai.”

Peter Rufai’s influence on Nigerian football remains profound, his name forever etched among the nation’s greatest sportsmen.
