Reports have hinted that the Eric Chelle-led Super Eagles of Nigeria will play football heavyweights in friendlies before the next 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

Recent reports have confirmed that the Super Eagles of Nigeria will be scheduled to engage in country friendlies as a buildup ahead of their final fixtures in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

According to The Guardian, the Super Eagles of Nigeria are set to face familiar foes, Ghana, in a friendly match during the June 2025 international window.

This game will complement their scheduled friendly against Russia, providing two critical challenges for the team as they gear up for the next stage of their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign. Although exact dates are yet to be finalized, these friendlies are expected to play a vital role in sharpening the team for their September qualifiers against Rwanda and South Africa.

Head coach Eric Chelle’s team will host Rwanda in Uyo before travelling for a challenging away game against South Africa on matchday eight of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. The Super Eagles’ qualification hopes suffered a setback on Tuesday after a 1-1 draw against Zimbabwe, with questions on whether Nigeria can qualify for the World Cup being raised as well.

Following the draw, Chelle confirmed the Ghana fixture and revealed his plans to focus on the 2025 African Nations Championship (CHAN) in July before resuming World Cup qualifying duties later in the year. The friendly matches against Russia and Ghana will be pivotal for refining strategies and building momentum ahead of the World Cup qualifiers.
