Sutton Foster has filed for a divorce from Ted Griffin, her husband of over ten years.

The 49-year-old Tony-winning Broadway diva filed for divorce from her screenwriter husband, 53, in New York County Supreme Court on Tuesday, October 22, according to court records obtained by reporter’s at PEOPLE.

Emily, their seven-year-old daughter, is the couple’s only child.

Foster and Griffin married in Santa Barbara, California, in October 2014, following their engagement in August 2013.

After years of infertility struggles, they welcomed their daughter Emily through adoption in March 2016.

In October 2020, Foster, in an interview stated that sheltering in a place with her husband and daughter outside of New York City during the COVID-19 pandemic, was the first time that they were ever together for that amount of concentrated time without one of them travelling or having to leave for work every day.

She explained that this was especially for breakfast and dinner, adding, “We’re all seated at the table, and now my daughter will ask everyone, How was your day?

“We all enjoy sitting down and talking, and we’ve made it a priority to spend time together as a family every day.”

Foster said that the trio was “trying to make the most of the time,” and that her daughter was “really thriving” during that time that they “were all together.”

In a November 2021 column for PEOPLE about her adoption process, Foster said:

“I was always on the fence about whether I even wanted to have children.

“Growing up, I had a difficult connection with my mother and was always focused on my profession. It was never evident to me. I married in my 30s; it didn’t last long, but it did give me the inclination that I might want to start a family.”

Foster was previously married to another Tony winner, Christian Borle. However, her friendship with Griffin altered everything, according to The Music Man star in her article “When I met my husband.”

“It was the first time I realised, ‘Oh, I understand,” She wrote adding, “I understand why people have families.”

Foster highlighted her relationship with Griffin in another interview in April 2015 where she claimed that he took her to Turks and Caicos for a “perfect” 40th birthday celebration.

When asked about her “extremely talented” husband’s work, she replied:

“He’s like, the smartest guy I’ve ever known. He’s extremely smart.”

Foster stated that they enjoy going to the theatre and watching films together.

While Griffin showed her “classics, like Rear Window,” the actress admitted she introduced him to other “silly” films.

“I’m trying to bring his intelligence a little bit down,” she stated.
