Nigerian singer Terry G has set social media abuzz after claiming he was the one who made it acceptable for artists to openly smoke on screen.

Nigerian singer and entertainer Gabriel Oche Amanyi, popularly known as Terry G, has stirred controversy on social media after boldly claiming he paved the way for artists to openly smoke cannabis on screen.

Taking to his X (formerly Twitter) account, the Free Madness hitmaker declared that his “sacrifice” made it culturally acceptable for contemporary artists to confidently showcase marijuana use on screen.

“No hard feelings, it’s all love, but no forget say if no be my sacrifice, none of your fav go get liver to smoke Igbo for screen,” Terry G wrote.

The post immediately sparked heated debate online, with many users disputing his claim. Critics were quick to remind him that legendary Afrobeat pioneer Fela Anikulapo-Kuti was openly smoking cannabis in the 1970s, decades before Terry G’s rise to fame.

Others mentioned icons like Majek Fashek and Daddy Showkey, known for their rebellious images and bold lifestyles long before Terry G’s eccentric, chaotic brand of music emerged in the late 2000s.

The conversation has since divided opinions online, with some defending Terry G’s influence on Nigeria’s pop culture, while others insisted that the groundwork had been laid by music legends long before him.
