Tory Lanez’s legal team held a press conference on Wednesday, May 14, to share new evidence they say could help overturn his 10-year prison sentence for the 2020 shooting of Megan Thee Stallion.
Lanez, whose real name is Daystar Peterson, was convicted in 2022 for shooting Megan after a party in the Hollywood Hills. But his lawyers now argue that he was wrongly accused and that it was Kelsey Harris, Megan’s former best friend, who fired the gun.
“Mr. Peterson never shot anybody. Never even touched the gun,” said attorney Walter Roberts at the event hosted by Unite the People, a nonprofit dedicated to social justice.
According to Roberts, Harris allegedly fired at Megan three times during the altercation, and Lanez only intervened in an attempt to stop her—resulting in two more accidental discharges. He also questioned the integrity of the forensic process, noting that only Lanez’s DNA was tested, while unknown DNA was also found on the weapon.
The legal team was joined by Gianno Caldwell, a political commentator who has taken up Lanez’s cause.
“Mr. Peterson was never given a fair trial, free from bias,” said Caldwell, who criticized former L.A. District Attorney George Gascón for allegedly rushing the case and ignoring key forensic protocols.
Caldwell also raised concerns over Kelsey Harris’s decision to plead the Fifth Amendment, despite not being formally accused by either Megan or law enforcement—fueling speculation about her role in the incident.
Support for Lanez’s claims came from Diana London, CEO of the Secret Weapon Agency, who emphasized the broader implications of the case.
“Tory Lanez doesn’t want special treatment. He’s demanding equal treatment,” London said, urging a reevaluation of the case and greater transparency in the legal process.
