Fenerbahçe head coach José Mourinho is set to face a significant absence following reports of his punishment for controversial remarks directed at Galatasaray.
Following the intense derby in Istanbul on Sunday, Mourinho criticized the Galatasaray bench for “jumping like monkeys” after an early challenge.
The Portuguese manager also suggested that the match would have been a “disaster” if a Turkish referee had been in charge, instead of Slovenian Slavko Vincic.
This prompted a swift response from Galatasaray with a strong statement, accusing Jose Mourinho, the Fenerbahce boss of racism and threatening legal action.
According to Sky Sports, the Turkish Football Federation has decided to impose a significant penalty or punishment as many would categorise it on Mourinho. He will serve a two-match suspension for his racist remarks, plus an additional two-match ban for offensive comments about the fourth official.
It has also been fined a total amount of 35,194 pounds. The Turkish Football Federation also categorised his comments as, “an act against sportsmanship.” Adding that, “contrary to the ethics of sports and the concept of fair play, contained expressions that could encourage violence and disorder in sports, were divisive and separatist in society and could cause fan incidents”.
As a result, Fenerbahce will be without their 62-year-old coach for their upcoming league matches against Antalyaspor, Samsunspor, Bodrum, and Trabzonspor on March 2, 16, 30, and April 2, 2025, respectively but the club has however confirmed that the decision would be appealed.
