South African music sensation Tyla lit up the stage at the 2025 Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards (KCAs), making history as both the host of the vibrant, slime-filled ceremony and the winner of the coveted Favourite Global Music Star award, representing Africa.
The awards show, held at the iconic Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, brought its signature chaos and color — and Tyla, 23, brought the star power. She kicked off the night with an electrifying “Best of Summer” dance party, spinning to the season’s hottest tracks with DJ Benny Blanco on the decks and an ensemble of dancers in tow. In true KCAs style, the performance even featured a surprise cameo by Smurfette.
The evening marked Tyla’s debut as a host of a major international awards show — a moment she described as “full circle.” As a child, she once auditioned for a role on Nickelodeon.
“It’s crazy how things come around,” she said before the show. “I just hope I only get a little drizzle of slime.” That wish? Totally denied. By the end of the show, she was drenched in classic green goo, joined by fellow presenters Jack Griffo and rising pop group KATSEYE.
Midway through the event, Tyla’s name was called for Favourite Global Music Star (Africa), beating out fellow artists from Asia, Australia, Europe, Latin America, North America, and the UK.
“This means the world to me — to represent Africa on a global stage and be recognised by all of you amazing kids out there … wow,” she said during her heartfelt acceptance speech. “Thank you for believing in me and dancing with me. Africa to the world!”
The win adds to Tyla’s rapidly expanding trophy shelf, which already boasts a Grammy, an American Music Award, and more than 30 international honors.
Her appearance and performance at the KCAs were widely praised for their energy, charm, and authenticity — a standout moment for African talent in global entertainment.
Also taking home multiple awards was pop star Sabrina Carpenter, who won three KCAs including Favourite Song for “Taste,” Female Breakout Artist, and Favourite Album for Short ‘n Sweet.
