Victor Boniface and Nathan Tella tie Nwankwo Kanu’s record for Nigeria

Bayer Leverkusen forwards Victor Boniface and Nathan Tella have both joined Nwankwo Kanu as the only Nigerian players with this remarkable record.

Bayer Leverkusen’s remarkable season saw them go unbeaten in all 34 games in the German Bundesliga as Xabi Alonso’s team recorded 28 wins and drew just 6 games in the league. 

Victor Boniface and Nathan Tella joined the Nigerian football legend Kanu Nwankwo as the only Nigerian footballers with a record of winning a league title in an unbeaten season with their respective clubs. Kanu achieved this feat as part of the Arsenal Invincibles squad in 2004, where he scored 3 goals in 24 appearances.

The outstanding performances of Nigerian players Victor Boniface and Nathan Tella were crucial to Leverkusen’s overall success. Despite missing nearly 3 months due to injury, Boniface who was named the Bundesliga Rookie of the Season for 2023/2024 managed to score an impressive 13 goals in 22 games. 

On the other hand, Tella also made a huge contribution in his 24 appearances as he scored 5 goals. Their contributions were instrumental in helping Bayer Leverkusen finish 17 points clear of second-placed Stuttgart, breaking Bayern Munich’s 11-year hold on the title. Notably,
