Nigerian gospel singer Victoria Orenze has shared her stance on the controversial topic of gospel musicians charging for performances at church events.
In a recent video, the I Get Backing singer revealed that she does not request payment to minister, stating it was a direct instruction from God.
According to Orenze, her talent was freely given, and as such, she chooses to serve without attaching a price. She further explained that while she doesn’t charge for her ministrations, she takes care of her team using proceeds from digital streaming platforms. The singer emphasized that she discourages her band members from developing a mindset of billing churches and congregations for their services.
“There’s no way you can love money and serve God,” Victoria Orenze remarked, urging fellow gospel musicians to carefully choose their priorities while charging for performances.
This statement comes shortly after a heated conversation within the gospel community involving singer Timi Dakolo and Pastor Femi Lazarus over the issue of gospel artistes charging for ministrations. The debate, which once stirred reactions online, has since been addressed and amicably resolved by both parties.
Apostle Lazarus had initially expressed concerns about gospel singers placing fees on their ministrations, urging them to remember their role as ministers of the gospel. In response, Timi Dakolo defended the right of gospel artists to earn a living from their craft, emphasizing the financial responsibilities that come with their work.
Following public exchanges, both men later clarified their positions and encouraged healthy dialogue within the gospel music and ministry space. The matter has since been settled, with the focus now shifted towards fostering mutual understanding between clergy and gospel artists.
