Chelsea Football Club in an official announcement confirmed the signing of 22-year-old striker Liam Delap from Ipswich Town. The England U21 international has inked a six-year deal, committing to the Blues until 2031.
Delap, who netted 12 goals in the Premier League last season despite Ipswich’s relegation, was a standout performer and attracted interest from several top clubs, including Manchester United and Newcastle.
However, Chelsea secured his signature by activating his £30 million release clause.
A significant factor in Delap’s decision according to reports was the opportunity to reunite with Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca, under whom he previously played during his time at Manchester City’s academy.
Additionally, the prospect of Champions League football and the chance to link up again with former City teammates Cole Palmer and Romeo Lavia played pivotal roles in his choice.

In a bold move, Delap has chosen to wear the No. 9 jersey at Chelsea, a number that carries a storied legacy that raws mixed reactions at the club. Expressing his enthusiasm, Delap stated, “I understand the stature of this club and can see the trajectory it is on with these players and the head coach. It’s going to be an incredible place for me to develop, and I hope to achieve amazing things here and help the club win more trophies.”
Delap is expected to make his debut in the upcoming Club World Cup, with Chelsea’s campaign kicking off on June 16 against Club Leon.
