Why Keeping My Marriage Private Was the Best Decision of My Life

Nollywood actress and filmmaker Ruth Kadiri has opened up about why she chose to keep her marriage largely out of the public eye, a decision she describes as one of the best she’s ever made.

In a recent candid interview on the Dear Ife podcast, the award-winning actress revealed that the choice to maintain a private family life was a mutual agreement between her and her husband. Their wedding, held in 2019, was intentionally low-key, with just 50 guests in attendance.

“I invited only 50 people to my wedding. It was exactly what we both wanted, and I didn’t want any drama around my relationship,” Kadiri said.

The Edo-born star, now 37, explained that keeping their relationship private has helped her stay grounded and focused. More importantly, it has shielded her husband—a non-celebrity—from the intense scrutiny and pressure that often come with public relationships.

“I think that’s the best decision I’ve ever made because it has helped me stay grounded and define my relationship. I also don’t have external factors influencing how I relate with my spouse,” she said. “People don’t know him, so there’s no pressure on him. He is just living his life, and he doesn’t really like attention anyway.”

Kadiri clarified that while she doesn’t flaunt her husband on social media, she’s not hiding him either. The couple attends church and public events together, but because he isn’t in the limelight, many people simply don’t recognize him.

“For clarity, my husband is not a secret. People who know me, know him—and that’s enough,” she added. “We go to church and events together, people post his pictures, but just because you don’t know him doesn’t mean he’s hidden. My life is not as private as people think.”

Since their marriage in 2019, the couple has welcomed two daughters.
