Here is why the Palmeiras vs Al Ahly Club World Cup fixture was suspended and if this is a permanent decision.

The Club World Cup fixture between Palmeiras and Al Ahly at MetLife Stadium took an unexpected turn on June 19, 2025, as adverse weather conditions forced a temporary suspension of play.

Officials made the call after a lightning storm was detected approaching the area, prompting immediate safety protocols.

The match was paused just past the hour mark, around the 62nd minute, with Palmeiras holding a 2–0 advantage.

The Brazilian side had taken the lead through an own goal by Wessam Abou Ali, followed by a well-placed finish from Flaco López.

Referee Anthony Taylor responded swiftly to weather alerts from the sidelines, directing both teams off the pitch.

Stadium authorities issued public safety announcements advising fans, commentators, and media personnel to evacuate the stands and seek shelter inside the stadium concourses.

This is the second time the weather has disrupted a Club World Cup game this year, following earlier delays in Cincinnati and Orlando due to similar lightning concerns.

Organizers have confirmed that the suspension is only temporary. The match will continue once meteorological officials confirm that lightning has moved beyond the 10-kilometer safety threshold.

Until then, both teams remain in their dressing rooms, awaiting further updates.
