Grammy award-winning singer and performer Wizkid declared in a recent post that the concept of afrobeats is faux as it is not a genre of music.

The singer had initially dropped hints on not wanting to be categorized as an afrobeats artist in previous posts shared on his social media platform Instagram on Friday, March 15, 2024, his recent post on social media which he shared on Saturday, March 16, 2024, explained the reason for his stance putting into perspective why he does not think afrobeats is a genre.

Wizkid stated that throughout his long and illustrious career, he has done all types of music and as such categorizing all the types of music he has done as afrobeats does not do justice to his artistry. He went on to state that he doesn’t want all his music to solely be categorized as afrobeats as it is a stupid classification as there is nothing like afrobeats, he went on to indicate that the concept of afrobeats is just a way of boxing what African artists create into just one category.

According to his statement, the musical genre known as afrobeats was essentially invented by certain individuals as a means of classifying the diverse range of music produced by African artists into a single, unified category.

His post on social media read, “U lost people always want someone to educate you. U got your phone Google research sh*t or take a flight and see the world don’t be ignorant and stupid all the time. Listen, am I African? Yes! But I do make all sorts of music. Fine music! But I don’t want these labeled just afrobeats. That’s like saying every American artist makes rap. That’s stupid. This is why no matter how good or amazing the music we make be it RnB or whatever other genre, we all get nominated in one Africa category or the other. I’ve made songs from different genres of music. Made in Lagos is not an ‘Afrobeats’ album. That’s a fusion of different sounds. Real music! The word Afrobeats was made up by y’all to put all we make into one box. Fela created Afrobeat!! I make All sorts of music. Fusion of sounds! ‘I’m an artiste’ before anything else. True to my art. Not scared to try shit. Now y’all drink some milk!”
