Grammy-winning artist Ibrahim Ayodeji Balogun, popularly known as Wizkid, is gearing up to release his latest album, Morayo, on November 22. The superstar has been teasing this project for months, and it serves as a heartfelt tribute to his late mother, Jane Dolapo Balogun, who passed away in August 2023.
Wizkid confirmed the release date via social media on Friday, October 18, sharing, “Morayo. Pre-save album! Nov 22.” The anticipation surrounding the album is palpable, especially following his recent single, ‘Piece of My Heart’, featuring American singer-songwriter Brent Faiyaz, which is also part of the upcoming project.
In a bold statement earlier this year, Wizkid made it clear that ‘Morayo’ is not an Afrobeats album, urging fans to approach it with an open mind. “Album name ‘Morayo’ best I ever made. I am not an Afrobeats artiste. Don’t call me that,” he wrote, adding, “If you like Afrobeats, please don’t download my album; I’m not Afro anything.”
Born Ayodeji Balogun, Wizkid first gained prominence in 2011 with his debut album, ‘Superstar’, and has since released four additional albums: ‘Ayo’ in 2014, ‘Sound From The Other Side’ in 2017, ‘Made In Lagos’ in 2020, and ‘More Love, Less Ego’ in 2022. His innovative sound has earned him numerous accolades, including a Grammy Award in 2021 for his collaboration with Beyoncé on the hit song ‘Brown Skin Girl’. Notably, ‘Made In Lagos’ was recently recognized as the most streamed Nigerian album on Apple Music.
