Wizkid has missed out on a Headies award for the second consecutive year.
The 17th Headies Awards, held on Sunday evening at the elegant Landmark Event Centre in Lagos, was a remarkable celebration of music, memorable moments, and exceptional achievements.
This glittering ceremony, expertly hosted by popular Nigerian actress Nancy Isime, recognised and honoured the best talents in African music, spanning the period between April 1, 2023, and July 31, 2024.
The event boasted an impressive lineup of stars, high-profile dignitaries, and enthusiastic fans, all gathered under one roof for what is widely regarded as one of the continent’s most anticipated and spectacular music events.
Wizkid, the award-winning Afrobeats icon, did not receive any award on the night. He had received only one nomination in the ‘Best Collaboration’ category for his 2023 hit single “IDK,” featuring Zlatan, a track on the EP Soundman Vol. 2 (S2).
Consequently, he missed out on the award, which went to the collaboration of Mohbad and Chike for their track “Egwu.”
This is the second consecutive year that Wizkid is missing out on a Headies Award since he claimed 5 in one night in 2022. Interestingly, Wizkid still holds the record for the most Headies Awards won by an artist, with a remarkable total of 20 wins to his name.
Wizkid’s journey at the Headies began in 2011, when he won his first award in the Next Rated category at the 6th edition of the ceremony.
Since then, Wizkid has consistently excelled at the Headies, with his most recent major win coming at the 2022 edition of the awards. The historic ceremony, held on September 4, 2022, at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre in Atlanta, saw Wizkid emerge as the biggest winner of the night, taking home a total of five awards. These included: Song of the Year – “Essence,” featuring Tems, Outstanding Collaboration – “Essence,” featuring Tems, Best R&B Single – “Essence,” featuring Tems, Album of the Year – Made in Lagos (Deluxe Edition), and Best Afrobeats Album – Made in Lagos
With the 18th edition of the Headies scheduled for later this year, and his sixth studio album Morayo, which features tracks like “Kese,” “Karamo,” and “Pray,” there is a strong possibility that Wizkid could take home one or more awards at the next edition.
