In a move many had anticipated, Wolves have confirmed the sacking of manager Gary O’Neil following his poor 2024/2025 season campaign at the club.

Wolverhampton Wanderers have announced the sacking of head coach Gary O’Neil following a 2-1 home defeat to Ipswich Town at Molineux on Saturday. The loss, which left Wolves languishing in 19th place in the Premier League, prompted the club’s management to make the decision to part ways with O’Neil.

O’Neil was appointed in August 2023 and steered the team to a 14th-place finish in the previous season. However, this season has been fraught with challenges, as Wolves have managed to collect only nine points from 16 league games. A series of disappointing performances, capped by the loss to Ipswich, ultimately led to the club’s decision to seek new leadership.

In an official statement, Wolves chairman Jeff Shi acknowledged O’Neil’s contributions but stressed the urgency for a turnaround. “We are grateful to Gary for his dedication and hard work. Unfortunately, given our current league standing, we feel a change is essential to improve our fortunes,” Shi stated.

The Ipswich match also featured a flashpoint involving Wolves’ Rayan Ait-Nouri, who was shown a red card after clashing with Wes Burns. The altercation reflected the growing tensions within the squad and added to the pressure on O’Neil’s tenure.

Wolves are now set to begin their search for a new head coach to guide the team through the remainder of the season. The club’s primary objective will be to secure Premier League survival and rebuild stability in their campaign.
