The global hip-hop community is mourning the loss of Irv Gotti, the co-founder of Murder Inc. Records, who died on Wednesday, February 5, at the age of 54.
Gotti, born Irving Domingo Lorenzo Jr., was instrumental in shaping the sound of hip-hop and R&B, starting his career as an A&R executive at Def Jam Recordings before launching Murder Inc. with his brother, Chris Gotti.
The label quickly became prominent in the early 2000s, producing hits for artists such as Ja Rule, Ashanti, and Lloyd.
In a statement shared on Instagram, Def Jam expressed deep sorrow over Gotti’s passing, acknowledging his impact on the music industry.
“Def Jam Recordings and the extended Def Jam family of artists, executives, and employees are deeply saddened at the loss of Irv Gotti. His contributions at Def Jam, both as an A&R executive and in partnership with Murder Inc., helped pave the way for the next generation of artists and producers.
His creative genius and unwavering dedication to the culture birthed countless hits, defining an era of music that continues to resonate with fans worldwide. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and all those who were touched by his work.”
Tributes poured in from across the industry, including from rapper Ye (formerly Kanye West), who collaborated with Gotti on the 2019 track “Brothers.” Ye shared a simple white dove emoji on Instagram, symbolizing peace.
However, longtime rival 50 Cent reacted in his signature style, posting an image of himself smoking next to a headstone that read “RIP,” along with the caption: “I’m smoking on dat Gotti pack, nah God bless him LOL.”
His post also featured a red carpet-photo of Gotti, a nod to their long-standing feud.
